Everything I paint is a visual journal; a map of my own history. I was here. This is what moved me. I regard my paintings as portals. They are a means to leave the real and arrive somewhere heightened, yet familiar. I work toward a specific light in my pieces. I grew up in northern Maine with long, dark winters, then between tall buildings in New York City. I lost the ability to see well for quite a while due to illness. When by some sort of grace I regained most of my sight, I considered what I had missed most, and what meant the most to me. For me it's light. I strive for a luminosity that may happen for only an nstant, one that if we're not paying attention, we could miss entirely. I find these moments incredibly dramatic, beautiful, and fleeting. I love the idea of arresting them. This is what compels me to make art now. |
